French artificial intelligence firm Mistral has announced Magistral, which is an ingenious AI model. Experts say it is Europe’s first model capable of reasoning. The discovery is a huge leap forward for Europe to compete in the world AI race. It allows Europe to challenge industry leaders such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
Magistral uses sophisticated chain-of-thought reasoning to solve complex problems. It breaks problems down into more manageable steps, which allows for better reasoning. This method is similar to the techniques utilized in the latest American AI design. However, Magistral stands out for its multilingual capabilities. It can take decisions quickly with ease in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, simplified Chinese, and various other languages. This makes it one of the most flexible AI models available today.
Mistral has introduced two variants of its model as part of this launch. Magistral Small is a 24-billion-parameter model that is open-source and accessible to everyone. In contrast, Magistral Medium is a more powerful version designed for enterprises, offering enhanced performance for business applications.

The reason for this launch to be significant is the company’s stance on transparency. Although the vast majority of AI firms are in total control of their offerings, Mistral has chosen to launch Magistral Small on platforms like Hugging Face, which is a sign of its faith in openness and transparency. This aligns with European principles of accessibility and technological security and ethical advancement in AI.
With the support of the French government and in line with President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to make France an international leader in AI technology, Mistral is set to become a major player within European technology. The CEO, Arthur Mensch, emphasized the importance of developing AI technology that reflects European values and priorities.
In the case of Mistral, Mistral is not simply launching a model; it is also launching a movement that will change the role of Europe in the coming years of AI.
