Many people across the United States were unable to access Elon Musk’s social network, X (formerly known as Twitter), on the weekend of June 14. A widespread outage caused the disruption, which began in the afternoon and escalated quickly. According to tracking service Downdetector, the issue peaked with over 10,000 user complaints in real time.

The downtime affected many main features of the platform, including updating timelines, loading timers, displaying notifications, and accessing direct messages. Users from major U.S. cities—New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago—reported issues lasting for a long time.

At 7.42 p.m. Eastern Time, users reported fewer problems, just under 1,000. This was the first sign of the process of recovering service. The majority of users saw improvements in performance. But there were some who experienced intermittent problems.

The Downdetector, which aggregates user-submitted reports, labeled the incident as one of the biggest interruptions on the X platform in the last few months. It’s unclear if the problem was due to maintenance on the server, a system failure at the backend, or an external cause.

At present, Elon Musk and the X engineering team haven’t given an official explanation for the reason for the outage. But Musk has recently acknowledged that the platform is undergoing major infrastructure changes as part of his plan for transforming X into an integrated AI-powered application.

In a recent blog post, Musk stated he will improve the speed and reliability of X. He remains actively involved in Tesla, SpaceX, and other ventures.

This latest incident highlights the problems faced by platforms that are experiencing rapid changes. As the service is restored slowly, users are on the lookout for new issues. X has advised users to report any issues while the team continues to check the stability of the system.
