June 6, 2025—Seattle, WA — Amazon has announced a fresh round of job losses targeting the company’s Books division, which includes teams such as Kindle as well as Goodreads. Amazon’s goal is to increase efficiency and cut down on the number of layers of management. Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy has emphasized this strategy in the last year in the context of Amazon’s larger organizational restructuring.

According to company sources, the latest downsizing impacts just 100 employees. Although it appears tiny compared to Amazon’s world workforce, it reveals an evident shift in operations. Amazon continues reorganizing even long-standing departments like Books. This department has been a major element of the company since the beginning.

A memo from Amazon’s internal team, obtained by Business Insider, revealed plans to eliminate certain positions soon. However, the company will repurpose those roles in other areas. This shows Amazon isn’t cutting its investment in books. The Books division is instead reallocating resources to align with new business priorities.

Amazon Cuts More Jobs in Its Books Division

Amazon is offering affected employees full pay and benefits for 60 days. In states like New York and New Jersey, the period extends to 90 days. They will also receive severance packages and job placement support.

The announcement comes after a number of changes across Amazon departments over the last 18 months. This includes Alexa advertising, ad sales, as well as retail operations. Despite layoffs, Amazon has reported a net increase of 4,000 new jobs in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the fourth quarter of 2024. While Amazon is eliminating jobs, it is also creating new jobs in areas of growth.

Amazon’s actions mirror a tech sector trend that is characterized by companies adapting their workforce to meet the changing business and economic needs.
