Alibaba Rolls Out Cutting-Edge Open-Source AI Model for Coding
Beijing, July 23, 2025 Alibaba has unveiled Qwen3-Coder, the most sophisticated open-source AI model designed to write software and autonomously code. This step will further see the Chinese tech giant enter the global AI race, taking on domestic and foreign pioneers in the field of generative AI.
The team at Alibaba Cloud built Qwen3-Coder to tackle everything from simple code generation to complex, multi-step programming tasks. It goes far beyond just spitting out code snippets—this model can actually plan, execute, and even debug large projects on its own.
“This model can act as a coding agent, capable of following logical steps to solve complex development problems,” said Alibaba’s release note.

The flagship model, Qwen3-Coder-480B-A35B-Instruct, is built using a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture. It includes a staggering 480 billion parameters, with 35 billion active at any time. It also supports an extended context length of 256,000 tokens, expandable to nearly 1 million tokens, allowing it to handle massive codebases and extended logic chains.
Alibaba has released the model openly to the developer community, including both the code and pre-trained weights. Developers can run the model locally or integrate it into projects using an easy-to-use command-line interface (CLI) tool provided by the company.
Performance Benchmarks and Global Comparisons
Alibaba claims that Qwen3-Coder outperformed several domestic competitors, such as models created by DeepSeek and Moonshot AI. It also competes well with other leading Western models such as Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, and OpenAI GPT-4, particularly in coding tasks such as HumanEval and MBPP.
