May 27, 2025 – Chinese officials have publicly claimed the Taiwan’s government Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is behind a massive cyberattack on a company in the field of technology located within Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The Guangzhou Municipal Police Security Bureau’s Tianhe District Branch issued a press release stating that a hacker gang, allegedly supported by the DPP, perpetrated the attack.

The attack, which occurred on the 20th of May, focused on the system backend of self-service devices. The attack caused numerous service interruptions and has created concerns about possible security compromises. The investigation claims that the hackers used a mix of methods for cyber-intrusion, such as email phishing, exploiting known vulnerabilities in systems, brute-force password attempts, and even simple Trojan software to break into the network of the company.

China Accuses Taiwan of Cyberattack on Tech Firm

Authorities also stated that this hacker group has been active in engaging in cyberattacks over the last several years. They targeted over 1,000 critical networks across 10 provinces in mainland China. The attacks reached sectors like defense, transport, energy, and government. Officials reported a sharp rise in both the scale and frequency of such attacks since 2024. This pattern suggests a deliberate use of cyber tactics to disrupt and sabotage essential systems.

Chinese state-owned media outlets like Global Times and China Daily have increased the severity of the accusations, presenting the incident as a part of wider hostilities within cross-strait relations. Despite the seriousness of the accusations, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council has not yet issued a formal statement.

The latest allegations highlight the increasing cybersecurity tensions that exist between China and Taiwan. Both sides previously accused the other of engaging in cyberespionage as well as cyber-related propaganda for misinformation. The situation continues to develop as people wait for Taiwan’s response.
