Rome, Italy – April 21, 2025
In an unprecedented step that combines journalism and new technology, Italian daily Il Foglio has given AI the capability to write a complete, four-page story for their newspaper. The one-month test, considered a first for the world, is getting a lot of attention and even awe due to the AI’s bizarre ability to entertain and its literary intelligence.
Il Foglio initially launched the project as a test, but it turned out to be so successful that the company has decided to release AI-written content each week. The company’s sales increased over the course of the AI campaign, indicating that the readers found the online columnist entertaining, even though not awe-inspiring in the fullest sense.
Chief Editor Claudio Cerasa stressed that the project doesn’t aim to replace human journalists. “Our goal is to explore how AI can complement journalism, not compete with it,” Cerasa declared. He also said that the AI displayed an extraordinary ability to read literature and use the wit of a journalist, but he also said that it did not have critical judgement and occasionally made inaccurate facts.

Cerasa has also highlighted the potential for AI to assist with areas in which the newspaper does not have expertise in-house, for example, astronomy. She said, “When used wisely, AI can inspire human creativity and deepen our storytelling.”
The trial has led to controversy across Italy and around the world. Some have argued that it is an indication of what the future holds for journalism, with others warning against relying too heavily on narratives generated by machines.
In the meantime, as Il Foglio moves forward by introducing its AI-enhanced newsroom, it is evident that what lies ahead for journalists could be a blend of humans and AI.
