Vietnam has officially accepted SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service to operate in the country. As a result, this move marks a significant step toward enhancing the nation’s digital infrastructure. Moreover, the government has granted approval for Starlink to provide internet services on a trial basis until 2030. Furthermore, the company will have the authority to permit full foreign ownership of its local subsidiary.
The move comes after months of discussions between Vietnamese officials and SpaceX. The Vietnam government has expressed its desire to take advantage of new technologies. This decision will offer internet access at a high speed to the remote and under-served areas in Vietnam. This initiative aligns with Vietnam’s broader objectives for advancing technology nationwide.
The decision is the result of several recent initiatives taken by Vietnamese government officials. Additionally, it seeks to improve relations between Vietnam and America. It also aims to enhance Vietnam’s digital capabilities in the United States. Additionally, in February 2025, the Vietnamese government announced plans to upgrade the country’s digital infrastructure. In addition, the PM, Pham Minh Chinh, directed government agencies to accelerate the process of granting licenses for Starlink as part of the broader U.S. trade discussions.
Starlink’s satellite Internet service, which operates through the constellation of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites and will provide reliable broadband to regions where the traditional internet infrastructure is not available or isn’t reliable. This initiative is an element of a larger plan by Vietnam to improve its internet infrastructure and increase the digital sector of its economy.
For SpaceX, this approval is the first step of Starlink’s worldwide expansion. Vietnam is one of the countries that has recently adopted satellite internet. Starlink already operates in several countries. The move will increase the presence of Starlink throughout Southeast Asia.
